Campus Visits in Fall 2007

ARTstor, along with CDL, is planning campus visits in early fall 2007 to demonstrate ARTstor to faculty and to meet with campus stakeholders for training and to discuss implementation options such as integrating campus courseware with ARTstor.

Coming Soon – University of California Shared Images
ARTstor will be hosting the University of California Shared Image Collection, individual collections managed by UC visual resources curators, which will be accessible to faculty and students across all campuses that subscribe to ARTstor.  While initially focused on providing images for teaching within the Arts and Humanities, the UC Shared Images will be useful campus-wide. UC Santa Cruz, in making their collection available to other UC campuses in ARTstor, is the first to participate in the University of California Shared Image Collection. Other campuses will add collections to ARTstor, contributing an estimated 100,000 images over the next year.  CDL will add the CDL-licensed collections to ARTstor this fall, which include Saskia and Hartill.  All of these collections, developed individually in ARTstor over the next year, will comprise the larger University of California Shared Image Collection.

UC faculty and students will be able to seamlessly search across UC Shared Images and the ARTstor collections.

CDL Survey Software License to Expire – Campus Action May Be Required

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | Category: General, Assessment

By Felicia Poe, CDL Assessment, Design & Production Manager

For the past six years, CDL has maintained a license to the WebSurveyor survey software tool, now called "Vovici", and UC campus library staff were given use of the software. CDL’s license expires on October 1, 2007, and it is our intention to transition to a free/low-cost cost web-based survey tool.  Unfortunately, this will impact those campuses that are currently using, or have used in the past, the WebSurveyor/Vovici survey software.

A bit of background: WebSurveyor and Perseus merged to become Vovici a few months ago; the merge has resulted in changes to both the software and the account structure. CDL’s current account with Vovici will expire in October, and we are taking the opportunity to explore different survey tool options. In the past, CDL’s WebSurveyor license allowed us to extend use of the survey software to campus library staff, and we were happy to coordinate usage, offer general advice on survey construction, etc. Moving forward, however, CDL will no longer be able to coordinate or offer survey tools to the campuses. There are many free or low-cost survey tools available online, e.g., SurveyMonkey and Zoomerang, and individual campuses can decide which product best suits their needs.

All current surveys will need to be completed or migrated to new software by September 15, 2007. Additionally, all data that you want to keep will need to be exported to a local campus machine by September 15. In the next week, CDL will be sending out an email to anyone who has an active/inactive survey regarding these changes.

Please note that Vovici has the ability to export to Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF formats. Survey data may be exported to a Comma Separated Values file or a Tab Delimited Text file. You can do all of this from the online interface. The Vovici Help environment has a FAQ with instructions for exporting/downloading.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you or your colleagues, and will work to notify anyone who might be impacted by this transition.

Questions about this change should be directed to Felicia Poe (felicia.poe@ucop.edu).

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences Backfile Now Available

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | Category: General, Collection Development

By Anneliese Taylor (UCSF)

The backfile for the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is now available online via Blackwell Synergy at http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/loi/nyas.

The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest scientific journals in the United States and among the most cited of multidisciplinary scientific serials. Each year the Annals publishes 28 conference proceedings in established and emerging scientific fields sponsored by the NYAS as well as those of other scientific organizations.

The backfile goes back to volume 1, December 1879, and both SFX and SCP records have been updated with the additional years. Blackwell is in the process of re-scanning some older content due to image quality, so there are some gaps in the holdings. UCSF purchased this backfile for the UC system.

California Cultures

Monday, August 6th, 2007 | Category: General, Digital Special Collections

By Rosalie Lack, CDL Digital Special Collections Director

The Calisphere’s California Cultures (http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/calcultures/) web site has been redesigned.

For each of the ethnic groups (African, Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans) you will now find 3-5 historical topics; each topic includes a selection of 20-50 representative images and documents and historical context. In addition, each ethnic group includes browse terms as a way for users to easily access the content.

California Cultures was originally a grant funded project in which UC campuses participated and contributed over 20,000 items. The site provides access to the original grant-funded content as well as to existing and new content related to African, Asian, Hispanic, and Native Americans.
