Resource Liaisons Program Update

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 | Category: General, Collection Development

By Ivy Anderson, Director of CDL Collection Development & Management

Bob Heyer-Gray (UCD) recently undertook a part-time appointment as Interim Resource Liaisons Coordinator at the CDL through August 2007.  Bob did a wonderful job in this temporary assignment organizing the April 2007 Resource Liaisons meeting, gathering and organizing the annual vendor evaluations from the RLs for the 2006/2007 resource work plan, working on the recruitment of new Resource Liaisons, and serving as a general point person for Resource Liaison issues.  The CDL has had to release Bob to take up his new role as LAUC President.  Bob, many thanks for your months of service to the CDL and your UC colleagues.

Beginning immediately, please contact Wendy Parfrey for questions and assistance with Resource Liaison-related matters.  Wendy can be reached at wendy.parfrey@ucop.edu.

CDL hopes to launch the recruitment for a reconfigured position incorporating Resource Liaisons coordination responsibilities in the next few months.

Telnet Melvyl Retired

Friday, September 7th, 2007 | Category: General, Bibliographic Services

By Ellen Meltzer, CDL Information Services Manager

As a reminder, Telnet Melvyl ceased as of August 31, 2007. In 2003, the UC campus libraries launched a new version of the Melvyl Catalog based on software from Ex Libris, running on the IBM AIX platform. Both the Web and Telnet versions of the catalog were maintained. Now, in 2007, the catalog is being upgraded to a newer version of the Ex Libris software, running on a Sun Solaris platform. Maintaining the Telnet interface to Melvyl, which was little used by UC students, faculty, and staff, would have been prohibitively expensive, due to the change from IBM to Sun hardware. The Telnet software version CDL ran did not support the Sun platform and would have required a significant investment in staff time and resources to set up and maintain.

With input from the UC Heads of Public Services (HOPS), Heads of Technical Services (HOTS), and Collection Development Committee (CDC), and in consultation with library staff, it was decided to cease production of the Telnet version of Melvyl on August 31, 2007 because of the technical difficulty and expense of maintaining it.

Users who desire the flexibility of command line searching can use the Command Search feature available on the web version of the Melvyl Catalog. Command searching is the most effective way to perform complex searches as it affords a great deal of control over the search results.

Please remember to update your websites, guides, etc.

Next Generation Melvyl – Intense Planning Taking Place

Monday, September 3rd, 2007 | Category: General, Bibliographic Services

By Ellen Meltzer, CDL Information Services Manager

Many of your colleagues have NOT been having a quiet summer, but have been intensely engaged in delving into how a Next Generation Melvyl Catalog, supported by the WorldCat Local Service might work, given the complexities of 10 unique UC campus libraries, 4 different Integrated Library Systems (ILS) among the 10 campuses, and an uncountable variety of practices among us all, not to mention understanding the challenges of OCLC’s systems and work flows.  Task group members, guided by impressive group leads, have displayed an enormous amount of passion, work and effort.

Keep up-to-date on the planning for this pilot project by checking: http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/about/uc_oclc.html.

The items below were added to the web site since the beginning of August.

New task group charges added include:

  • Circulation Transactions Task Group, added 8/6/07
  • Mass Digitized Content Task Group, added 8/29/07

  • UC-eLinks Task Group Interim Report, dated 7/25/07
  • Request/Resource Sharing Final Report, dated 8/7/07

  • Delivery Services, added 8/9/07

Three previously planned task groups are being put on hold for the moment: “Buy-It” links, Authentication, and Mining Authority Records for Recommending.  As the project progresses, we will re-evaluate launching these groups.

Remember, you can keep up-to-date on this pilot project by subscribing to an RSS feed from the project site: http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/about/uc_oclc.html.
