The eScholarship Repository reached an important milestone last week: the 2,000,000th full-text download from the repository.

See < http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/ >.

Adoption of the eScholarship Repository is accelerating. It took two years to log the first half-million downloads in the repository, but only a single year to reach the one million mark. Now, in less than nine months, use of the repository has doubled again, bringing the complete article and paper downloads beyond 2,000,000. The repository, which is used by UC scholars and researchers in more than 200 academic departments systemwide, should reach another significant milestone before year’s end — 10,000 unique paper and articles submissions.

Several new services have enhanced the eScholarship Repository’s appeal. The Postprints service, which was launched in February of this year, increased submissions by 20% and seems to have fed rising interest in journals and other peer-reviewed series–including a new monographic series by UC Press http://repositories.cdlib.org/ucpress/. Also, beginning this month the Postprints service supports submission of articles to the repository by author-assigned proxies. Finally, academic units and departments can retrospectively and virtually collect postprints into their branded collections without disturbing the unique Postprints collection. For more information see: http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/about.html

The postprints feature allows UC faculty who have retained the appropriate copyrights or who obtain permission from their publishers to easily deposit previously published articles into a publicly accessible online repository.

The postprints are fully searchable, available free of charge, and are persistently maintained in a centrally managed database. UC faculty interested in joining the eScholarship Repository and depositing papers via the new postprints service can find more information on the eScholarship Repository web site at http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/about.html.

Institutions can now access their digital collections in the CDL METS Repository through their own interfaces, using the newly released CDL Interface Customization Tools: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/repository/customize/

The CDL has been developing a digital object repository to support the collections it manages, which currently contain more than 150,000 images, texts, and other materials encoded in the Metadata and Encoding Transmission Standard (METS) format. The Interface Customization Tools allow institutions to access their digital object collections in the CDL METS Repository, while using their own branding and customized interfaces.

Three IMLS and LSTA-funded digitization projects have already successfully used these tools:

Museums and the Online Archive of California (MOAC): http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/moac/

UC Berkeley Bancroft Library California Heritage: http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/calheritage/

Japanese American Relocation Digital Archives (JARDA): http://jarda.cdlib.org/

What are the Interface Customization Tools?

Using the documentation, templates, and training the CDL provides in the form of a tool kit, institutions will be able to provide web access to their content in the way they choose.

Who can use the tools?

At present, any contributor to the CDL METS Repository or any UC library may customize the presentation of the repository for non-commercial use. Open Archives Initiative (OAI) service providers can harvest items and provide services in their own environment. All metadata is compliant with OAI-PMH 2.0.

Can the interface of all types of collections be customized?

Image collections and metadata-only searches are currently available. The ability to fully customize the presentation of TEI-encoded texts, EAD-encoded finding aids, and DDI-encoded data sets will be added in early 2005.

What skills are required to do this?

General web design and development skills (knowledge of HTML and web forms) and XSLT programming stills are needed to use the tool kit.

For more information, see: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/repository/customize/

University of California faculty can now use the eScholarship Repository to provide free, open access to peer-reviewed series and journals online at http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/peer_review_list.html.

The eScholarship Repository’s new peer-review capability provides UC faculty with several benefits. By publishing a journal or peer-reviewed series in the eScholarship Repository, faculty can automate and speed up the review and publication process, and publish associated content alongside articles. In addition, the Repository provides faculty with an alternative to publishing their research in for-profit journals.

The first peer-reviewed journal in the eScholarship Repository is San Francisco Estuary and Watershed Science, published by the John Muir Institute of the Environment at UC Davis. It joins other peer-reviewed materials in the eScholarship Repository, including papers and edited volumes from the UC International and Area Studies Digital Collection.

The CDL expects the number of peer-reviewed papers and journals to grow substantially in coming months, with the addition of scientific monographs and other content from the University of California Press, as well as new journals sponsored by departments at several UC campuses, including InterActions: UCLA Journal of Education and Information Studies. Additionally, Comitatus, a 34-year-old journal sponsored by the UCLA Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, will be migrating to the eScholarship Repository this spring.

For information about how UC departments, centers, and research units can join the eScholarship Repository, go to: http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/join.html

The eScholarship Repository <http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/> has reached several major milestones since its launch in April 2002. The Repository offers University of California faculty a central online location for depositing working papers, technical reports, research results, datasets with commentary, and peer-reviewed series. It is free for scholars to upload papers and free for users to download them. The CDL guarantees persistent access to the content.

Nearly 100 UC institutes, departments, research units, and centers from 9 UC campuses have joined the repository. The eScholarship Repository contains 1,200 papers. Users have logged 60,000 full-text downloads of repository scholarship. Usage statistics show that over 95 percent of repository users are coming from outside UC, including 38 countries. This demonstrates the increased visibility the repository offers UC faculty.

A wide range of subjects can be found in the repository, including social science, business, education, humanities, and the sciences. The Anderson School of Management at UCLA, Center for Studies in Higher Education at Berkeley, University of California Energy Institute (a Multi-Campus Research Unit), Economics Department at Santa Barbara, Center for Conservation Biology at Riverside, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography at San Diego are just a few of the UC academic departments and research units with repository sites.

The eScholarship Repository also supports peer-reviewed series, which offer scholars an alternative to for-profit journals. The University of California International and Area Studies (UCIAS) Digital Collection <http://repositories.cdlib.org/uciaspubs/> has been available since summer 2002. Further information on starting a repository peer-reviewed series can be found at <http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/peer_review.html>.

The complete March 12, 2003 press release on the eScholarship Repository can be found at <http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/milestones.pdf>. Additional information on the repository is available at <http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/about.html> or through your campus eScholarship liaison <http://escholarship.cdlib.org/liaisons.html>.
